Master Weaver — Traditional Zapotec Textiles
Doña Elena Martínez
Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca
Doña Elena is one of Oaxaca's most respected weavers. Working on a traditional pedal loom passed down through four generations, she creates textiles using natural dyes extracted from cochineal, indigo, and local plants. Her patterns draw from Zapotec geometry — each motif carrying ancestral meaning.

Elena's grandmother taught her to weave before she could read. Now she leads a cooperative of twelve women in Teotitlán del Valle, preserving techniques that predate the Spanish arrival. Her work bridges pre-Hispanic tradition and contemporary design, creating textiles that feel timeless.
